The Art of Communicating

Announcing the first Confident English Training Book Club and Study Group, meeting online to read The Art of Communicating, by Thich Nhat Hanh, in English.

Who is it for?

Expert professionals at intermediate to advanced (B1 - C1) levels of English, especially if using English socially or professionally produces stress, anxiety or frustration.

This is a golden opportunity to go beyond conventional English grammar and vocabulary lessons and transform your ability to communicate freely and effectively, from the inside out.

The Art of Communicating is filled with the deep insight and wisdom of Zen master, peace activist, scholar, and writer, Thich Nhat Hanh. With purity, simplicity and skill, this clear and practical guide reveals how to listen and express yourself fully and authentically in any situation.

Countless people have been supported by Thich Nhat Hanh to shift from frustration and misunderstanding to listening and speaking in such a way that genuine interconnection become not only possible, but tangible reality.

In our everyday lives and in our work, we need to communicate with others, and to a large extent, our communication style is dictated by the habits we have established based on what we consume, not only through our mouths, but through our other senses, as well as our thoughts.

For the first time ever, we'll be meeting live on a weekly basis to read and discuss a whole book over a 6-week period. We're going to study, practise, understand, and train ourselves to observe of our own moment-to-moment experience and to learn, through concrete examples, how to communicate with others even when difficulties arise, at work and in the world.

When?

Our meetings will run for 6 weeks, from 9 August to 13 September 2023, by zoom, every Wednesday at 6PM (US Mountain Standard Time), but it is not necessary to attend live, as we'll be sharing all the recordings, audios and resources with everyone who registers.

You will have access for one month after this Book Club and Study Group has ended, unless you are already a member of the CET community, in which case you will enjoy lifetime access to all recordings, materials and resources.

What are we going to study and practise?

In a way, the whole book is about cultivating a spirit of understanding towards oneself and others. At the same time, each chapter is an invaluable jewel filled with examples from Thich Nhat Hanh's work with couples, families, and international conflicts, inviting us to cultivate awareness of our body, emotions and thoughts, and to establish ourselves in the present moment, with curiosity, gentleness and patience.

Who will be guiding?

The reading of the book - chapter by chapter, page by page, line by line - in English, will be guided by Tanya Meyer, Rogelio Moreno, Claudia Hernandez, Andrew Watson and Toni Martin. We're going to dive into this book as a community, to learn how to listen and speak in such a way that is conducive to helpful, authentic communication, even when English might not be our first language.

We will also be looking at the simple practices shared by Thich Nhat Hanh that we are invited to incorporate into our daily lives as a way of training ourselves to communicate with clarity, understanding and joy.
